Just spotted this on one of my geeky sites, with a link to the Daily Mail

Incapacity benefit axed in four years: All payouts to go in crackdown on workshy

There's quite a difference between someone who is workshy, which I have no doubts there's plenty of on the scheme, and the thousands of people with serious debilitating long term health conditions. to tar everyone everyone with the same brush is an insult to the people put out of work often by company doctors who felt you weren't well enough to continue.

A crack down is needed, but lets not forget that's it's not just people on benefits who could be abusing tax payers cash

Well it would be the Daily Mail that printed that!

As I understand it, all current IB claimants will be assessed for ESA, starting in the autumn and ending in approx. 4 years time, or maybe longer if everyone appeals putting the sytem into meltdown!

I agree the benefits system needs sorting out, but not at the expense of genuine claimants.

I was chatting with some friends yesterday about the whole scheme of things at the moment, thousands of people are fearing the cut backs that will no doubt be taking place, putting thousands of folks out of work.

They raised a valid point saying with all these extra people to choose from in the job market are they really going to offer a job to someone with a long term condition? In some cases as soon as you mention RA (or any other long term health condition) you're suddenly overqualified, under qualified or the position has been filled. No firm is going to admit discrimination, but they can easily find another excuse.

Many of the folks I know with various long term conditions do some sort of voluntary work, and while I'm not advocating that there should be pay for this I do think the fact that despite their health conditions people are giving something back to the community, which is the current coalition governments Big Plan, and it should be recognised.

There's a huge difference between folks who can't work due to genuine ill health and the "workshy" and it's about time the genuine folks weren't all tarred with the same brush.

In general healthy people do not understand the complexities of having a longterm condition. Theres just been too much press advocating that all on benefits are workshy. It really needs for people to stand up and counter these negative arguments. unfortunately those on benefits are shamed so they dont.

I totally agree with joanne C about the labour market with all the choice what hope is there for someone over 40 (which is usually when you get RA) plus having a medical condition that may not be able to function as effectively as a healthy worker. Better to allow those on incapacity related benefits to contribute by voluntary work.

There really needs to be a more focus approach by the state rather than one size fits all. I would start my own business that would suit but cant for the life of me think what I could do.
